CONTEXT
Origin Story
How SLICK makes complex global-brand production feel straightforward across graphic design, print, signage, email, digital and operational communications.
One urgent request that became an enduring relationship.
Shell Australia first engaged SLICK in 2009.
One of its production providers at the time had been unable to meet an urgent deadline attached to a recent request, and a mutual contact recommended SLICK as a reliable local team with the responsiveness and production capability Shell needed.
The first assignment was deliberately modest: the design and production of a certificate. It gave Shell an opportunity to test how SLICK interpreted a brief, managed an urgent timeline, communicated through production and prepared final material within the requirements of a globally governed brand.
That single assignment became the beginning of a relationship that has continued for more than 15 years.

Since 2009, SLICK has completed more than 2,000 projects and production tasks for Shell Australia. The relationship has extended across national, state and project marketing teams, marketing coordinators, human resources and, where required, international compliance stakeholders.
The work has grown from straightforward print production into a broad multidisciplinary service spanning graphic design, publications, signage, digital communications, interactive documents, accessibility and operational material supporting major Australian energy projects.
FOUNDATION
Why SLICK?
Our relationship with Shell has evolved as their marketing needs have expanded, with a wide variety of services now utilised in our ongoing relationship.
Trust earned one project at a time.
The relationship did not expand through one major transformation or a single defining campaign, it developed through repeated delivery.
A successful print assignment led to further collateral. Print work expanded into event signage and physical applications. Digital requirements introduced EDMs, interactive PDFs and other online communications. Accessibility became increasingly important. New teams and departments began engaging SLICK as awareness of the relationship spread through the organisation.
The commercial model, similarly, evolved with the work.
At various stages, Shell has engaged SLICK through standing open purchase orders covering periods of up to 12 months. Other requirements are commissioned as individual projects, particularly as SLICK’s involvement has expanded beyond a single marketing team.
Whether work is delivered through a standing purchase order or an ad-hoc brief, the underlying service remains consistent: clear communication, responsive scheduling, disciplined production and close attention to Shell’s global standards.
OPERATIONS
Brand Compliance
Working with a global brand means no compromises when it comes to brand compliance, and strict adherence to the guidelines that define them, while not limiting the creative possibilities for marketing purposes.
Working inside a global brand system.
Producing for Shell involves considerably more than using the correct logo, typeface or colour palette.
As a global organisation, Shell applies a detailed and internationally enforced brand framework to the attribution, authorship, structure and visual presentation of its communications.
The requirements govern individual assets and the relationships between them. Layout structures, colour usage, typography, graphic styles, image treatment, scale, spacing and composition must operate within clearly defined parameters. For many applications, there is intentionally limited room for arbitrary variation.

The production challenge is to work creatively inside those parameters. Each piece still needs to communicate effectively, establish hierarchy, suit its audience and achieve the purpose of the brief. Compliance alone is not enough if the resulting material is unclear, undistinguished or difficult to use.
SLICK’s designers must understand where the system is fixed, where it permits controlled flexibility and how the available elements can be combined to solve different communication problems. A technical handbook, executive presentation, event sign, EDM and public-facing brochure may all use the same global system, but each requires a different design response.
Years of accumulated experience allow SLICK to approach that challenge with fluency rather than hesitation.
OPERATIONS
Brand Expression
Fluency and creativity enabled by a global update for the brand, but with strict compliance measures for us to navigate.
Operating within Shell’s Brand Expression 2.0 system.
Shell introduced its Brand Expression 2.0 system in mid-2023, creating a substantial change in how the brand could be expressed across both short- and long-form communications.
The update affected more than surface styling. It changed permitted layout structures, the use and relationship of brand assets, and the way information could be organised across different formats.
SLICK needed to become fluent in the new system quickly while continuing to respond to active production requirements.

Senior team members reviewed the updated material available through Shell’s Brand Central portal, interpreted how the rules applied to established communication types and guided the wider studio through the transition.
The team then created a suite of ready-to-use production templates for common requests. These templates combined strict compliance with practical flexibility. Approved elements, layouts and backgrounds could be assembled efficiently to suit different content requirements without rebuilding every application from the beginning or compromising the global system.
The result was not simply faster artwork production. It reduced uncertainty, created greater consistency across repeat communications and allowed creative effort to be concentrated where it added value.
Brand Expression 2.0 became a working production system rather than a new set of rules that stakeholders and designers needed to reinterpret for every request.
METHODOLOGY
Our Process
We engineered a custom WordPress website with intuitive pathways for parents, schools, and teachers to engage with the brand, and connect with the products TSP provides.
Compliance made repeatable through consistent process.
SLICK applies a structured internal process to all Shell material.
New designers do not begin producing Shell work based solely on general design experience. They receive hands-on training from senior SLICK staff using Shell-supplied standards, Brand Central resources and examples drawn from the agency’s accumulated production knowledge. This training helps designers understand both the explicit rules and the practical judgement required to use them.

Work is reviewed internally before being released for Shell’s consideration. Depending on the application, checks may cover:
- Correct use of Shell-approved assets.
- Typography, colour and visual hierarchy.
- Layout structures and relationships between elements.
- Scale, spacing and composition.
- Consistency across related or adapted materials.
- Suitability for print, digital or environmental production.
- Accessibility requirements.
- File preparation and technical production standards.
- Alignment with the audience, purpose and context of the request.
Senior oversight remains particularly important when standards change, a request falls outside common templates or a designer needs to balance a creative objective against a restrictive application rule.
This combination of training, templates, retained knowledge and internal review allows compliance to be managed systematically rather than depending on the memory of one designer.
It also creates continuity. Shell can access the capability of a wider production team while retaining the benefits of the specialist knowledge built through the relationship since 2009.
METHODOLOGY
Rapid Production of Compliant Material
Simple, effective, and transparent solutions for strengthening Shell Australia’s marketing production capacities through our dynamic ticket-board system for scalable delivery.
Making complex production easy to engage.
The compliance and coordination behind Shell work can be extensive. The experience for the stakeholder raising the request should not be.
Shell teams are provided with a dedicated SLICK-managed ticket board in Asana. It acts as a shared environment for submitting briefs, confirming priorities, reviewing progress, recording feedback and receiving final files.
Each request is processed by SLICK’s senior leadership team and studio coordinator. They assess the requirement, allocate the appropriate designer, schedule production and organise communication throughout the life of the task.

Shell stakeholders retain visibility without needing to manage SLICK’s studio directly. The board provides:
- Live task status.
- Time tracking.
- Priority and urgency markers.
- Centralised briefs and supporting files.
- Review and feedback channels.
- A clear record of decisions and revisions.
- Final delivery within the task itself.
This removes the uncertainty that often surrounds external production. Stakeholders can see that a request has been received, understand where it sits in the workflow and identify when their input is required.
Feedback remains attached to the relevant task rather than being dispersed across separate email chains, reducing version confusion and preserving a transparent production history.
The system is structured enough to protect accuracy while remaining straightforward for occasional users from different Shell departments.
METHODOLOGY
Managing Urgency
Using our dynamic scheduling system, SLICK is able to respond quickly and efficiently when tasks or projects require attention fast.
Responding when priorities change with haste.
Urgent work has been part of the relationship from its very beginning.
SLICK’s production model is designed to respond when a deadline cannot move, an opportunity emerges unexpectedly or an internal team discovers that it does not have the capacity to complete a requirement on time.
Individual client ticket boards operate within a wider studio-level scheduling system. SLICK’s senior team and studio coordinator can see commitments across accounts, assess the implications of a new priority and dynamically adjust the schedule.
Urgent Shell requests can therefore be assigned quickly without making existing commitments invisible or allowing other work to be silently displaced.
The urgency marker on Shell’s board identifies what requires immediate attention. Senior coordination then ensures that the appropriate resource is assigned, affected schedules are managed and communication remains clear.
PRODUCTION
Production in Scale & Scope
With no limit to the outputs we can create, our service offering continues to expand in response to client needs.
Production across every major touchpoint.
Over more than 2,000 projects and tasks, SLICK’s work for Shell has extended across a substantial range of communication formats.
Graphic Design & Publications
SLICK produces brochures, reports, cards, maps, handbooks, internal communications, presentations and other short- and long-form materials.
Each application requires the same brand discipline, but the design problem varies. A short promotional item must communicate quickly, while a detailed operational document needs to organise substantial information without losing clarity or compliance.
Print Production
The relationship began in print and continues to include extensive print-based work. SLICK prepares production-ready artwork, manages technical specifications and, where required, coordinates the transition from approved design to finished material.
The team’s familiarity with both Shell’s visual system and physical production helps identify issues before they reach the final stage.

Signage & Environmental Communications
SLICK’s scope includes event signage, wayfinding, branded activations and environmental applications. These materials introduce additional considerations such as scale, viewing distance, fabrication, installation and the relationship between individual signs within a larger physical environment.
EDM & Digital Communications
SLICK designs Shell EDMs and related digital material within the same global-brand framework. Digital communication requires the brand to remain recognisable and compliant while adapting to the structural, technical and usability constraints of email and screen-based formats.
Interactive Documents & Accessibility
The relationship has expanded to include interactive PDFs and material requiring greater attention to accessibility. These requirements reinforce the importance of producing communications that are not only visually correct but practical, navigable and appropriate for their intended users.
Events & Branded Activations
Shell’s event and activation requirements can include coordinated families of print, signage, display and digital assets. SLICK’s multidisciplinary capability allows related material to be managed as one communication system, helping stakeholders preserve consistency across every point of contact.
PROJECTS
Supporting Major Projects for Shell
How SLICK has produced critical marketing and communications material for the preparation, launch, and operation of key Shell projects in Australia.
Supporting the Crux and Prelude projects.
SLICK has provided considerable communication support connected with the development, launch and ongoing operation of Shell’s Crux and Prelude projects.
These engagements have required material capable of operating within major project environments while remaining consistent with Shell’s global standards.
The work has included handbooks and supporting communications for personnel working across the Prelude and Crux vessels and installations, as well as related project and operational materials.

Documents of this nature need to do more than look recognisably Shell. They must organise information clearly, support practical use and remain dependable across lengthy and content-dense formats. They may also involve input from marketing, project, human-resources and compliance stakeholders, each bringing different responsibilities to the review process.
SLICK’s retained knowledge of the Shell system reduces the need to relearn brand fundamentals at the beginning of each requirement. The team can focus instead on the specific communication problem, stakeholder feedback and production demands of the project.
Continued involvement from development and launch into ongoing operations reflects the broader nature of the relationship: SLICK is available not only for public-facing marketing but for the operational communications that help major projects function.
